1. The Ashbee Hotel

The Ashbee Hotel is a 5 star hotel that was built at the beginning of the 20th century. It was a villa originally built by English architect Robert Charles Ashbee in 1908. The villa was designed in the Greco-Sicilian style.

The hotel is only a 100 metres (328 feet) away from the Greek Theatre and right in front of San Pancrazio Church, so it’s in Taormina’s historical centre.

The Ashbee Hotel has 24 rooms each decorated with antique furniture. Some rooms are located in the main villa, whilst others are in a separate annexe.

St. George restaurant is a Micheline star restaurant, so expect to have fine dining while enjoying the panoramic views of the Ionian Sea. 🤩

2. San Domenico Palace, Taormina, A Four Seasons Hotel

San Domenico Palace Hotel has an interesting history. It dates back to the 14th century when it was a monastery only to be turned into a hotel in 1896 when they added The Grand Hotel Wing (remember how I said Taormina keeps having tourists since the 19th century?).

However, a Four Seasons Hotel Group opened San Domenico Palace in 2021 under their name! Guests can enjoy their historical frescoes and wander around its gardens which is pretty cool. You pretty much have a private attraction for yourself. 😍

And if you’re a White Lotus fan, the season 2 was filmed at San Domenico Palace!

It is centrally located and only 15 min walking distance from the Greek Theatre.

3. Grand Hotel San Pietro

Another beautiful and on my top 11 5 star hotels in Taormina list is Grand Hotel San Pietro. It also has an interesting history (I mean, which doesn’t, right!?). The villa, which is now the hotel, was built in the 1900s for 2 Danish sisters who were travelling and fell in love with Sicily.

It’s on the hill and therefore if you stay at Grand Hotel San Pietro, you will enjoy gorgeous views of Mount Etna and Isola Bella, the most famous beach of Taormina and a nature reserve.

The historical centre of Taormina is only 15 min walking.

4. Grand Hotel Timeo, A Belmond Hotel

If you ask me, Taormina’s Grand Hotel Timeo is probably THE BEST hotel you can book in Taormina. It is right opposite the Ancient Theatre of Taormina! 😍

Its history is ever more fascinating. Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe visited Taormina in 1787 and wrote about the Greek Theatre. This act literally put Taormina on the map. The founder of this beautiful hotel was Don Francesco La Floresta who in 1850 decided to rent rooms in his house. The newly created guest house was named Timeo, after Tauromenion (today’s Taormina), the son of the founder of the Greek city in 358 BC.

Over a decade later Don Francesco and his son Giuseppe added even more rooms to their guest house. English woman Lady Florence Trevelyan occupied the whole floor of rooms, She was exiled from Great Britain by Queen Victoria on the accusation of having an affair with her firstborn son Edward VII. She later married the mayor Salvatore Cacciola and purchased the Villa Communale. They built those beautiful gardens that you can visit today in Taormina.

After Goethe many writers kept visiting Grand Hotel Timeo, such as Oscar Wilde, Tennessee Williams and Truman Capote. It is also a favourite hotel of famous people like Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, Valentino, Madonna and Elton John.

5. Hotel Metropole Taormina

This beautiful luxury hotel is on the more affordable side of these 5 star hotels in Taormina, similar to The Ashbee Hotel and Grand Hotel San Pietro.

I think by now we concluded how all of these hotels share at least one thing in common, and by that I don’t mean the 5 stars. They are all historic buildings turned into hotels.

Hotel Metropole is inside a 13th century house! The hotel offers amazing views of Mt. Etna and Giardini Naxos, especially from its infinity pool! 🤩 It is right on Corso Umberto, main street of Taormina.

6. Atlantis Bay – VRetreats

Atlantis Bay is a great choice if you want to have a private access to the beach, but still be relatively close to the Taormina’s centre. It will take you about a 30 min walk to Taormina town centre or 12 min by car. The hotel is located on a cliff in Baia delle Sirene Bay. You can walk for 14 minutes to reach Isola Bella island. 😍

Suites at Atlantis Bay are really special. Most have large terraces with amazing sea views and all have separate living rooms/bedrooms with beautiful marble bathrooms. These are perfect for families as the living room can easily fit 2 single beds.

7. Mazzarò Sea Palace – The Leading Hotels of the World

Mazzaro Sea Palace is another luxury 5 star hotel in Taormina with a private beach area. You can walk for 12 min to get to Isola Bella. To reach Taormina centre, you can take a cable car or drive for approximately 30 minutes.

All rooms at Mazzaro Sea Palace offer amazing views of the Ionian Sea. My favourite is a Suite with a Private Pool. 😍 Can it BE better than that!?

8. Villa Sant’Andrea, A Belmond Hotel, Taormina Mare

Villa Sant’ Andrea is another 5 star Belmond Hotel in Taormina. While Grand Hotel Timeo is in the historic town centre just opposite the Greek Theatre, Villa Sant’ Andrea is in Bay of Mazzaro with access to the private beach. It is also only a 6 minutes’ walk from Isola Bella.

It was built in the 20th century by another noble Englishman, so you can expect the luxury touch of British countryside in the Mediterranean.

You can also swim in its infinity pool with gorgeous views of the Ionian Sea.

9. Palazzo Vecchio Taormina

Palazzo Vecchio Taormina is built on a 16th century wall and it’s right in Taormina town centre, 10 min walk from Porta Messina and very close to Corso Umberto.

What is beautiful about this hotel is that is designed in the Moorish architectural style, so orientalism details are seen everywhere. The bathrooms are particularly very elegant, made of marble to resemble the Ottoman-style Turkish spa.

Blu Sky Rooftop Bar is a great place to relax and soak up the Taormina views after a full day of different activities (and there are a lot of things to do in Taormina and the surrounding area!). 🥰
