Taormina is the most popular town in Sicily where tourists keep coming since the 19th century. Over the last 200 years some of the most beautiful hotels, villas and resorts were built. In this blog post, I am sharing with you my top 11 5 star hotels in Taormina for the ultimate luxury stay.

The Ashbee Hotel

The Ashbee Hotel is a 5 star hotel that was built at the beginning of the 20th century. It was a villa originally built by English architect Robert Charles Ashbee in 1908. The villa was designed in the Greco-Sicilian style.

The hotel is only a 100 metres (328 feet) away from the Greek Theatre and right in front of San Pancrazio Church, so it’s in Taormina’s historical centre.

The Ashbee Hotel has 24 rooms each decorated with antique furniture. Some rooms are located in the main villa, whilst others are in a separate annexe.

St. George restaurant is a Michelin star restaurant, so expect to have fine dining while enjoying the panoramic views of the Ionian Sea.

San Domenico Palace, Taormina, A Four Seasons Hotel

San Domenico Palace Hotel is a 5 star hotel in Taormina with a very interesting history.

It dates back to the 14th century when it was a monastery. It turned into a hotel in 1896 when they added The Grand Hotel Wing.

Finally, a Four Seasons Hotel Group opened San Domenico Palace in 2021 under their name. As a guest you can enjoy their historical frescoes and wander around its gardens. You pretty much have a private attraction for yourself!

And if you’re a White Lotus fan, the season 2 was filmed at San Domenico Palace!

The hotel is centrally located and only 15 min walking distance from the Greek Theatre.

It’s on the hill, so if you stay at Grand Hotel San Pietro, you will enjoy gorgeous views of Mount Etna and Isola Bella, the most famous beach of Taormina and a nature reserve.

The historical centre of Taormina is only 15 min walking.

Grand Hotel Timeo, A Belmond Hotel

If you ask me, Taormina’s Grand Hotel Timeo is the best 5 star hotel you can book in Taormina. It is right opposite the Ancient Theatre of Taormina!

Its history is probably the most interesting one. Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe visited Taormina in 1787 and wrote about the Greek Theatre. This act literally put Taormina on the map.

The founder of this beautiful hotel was Don Francesco La Floresta who in 1850 decided to rent rooms in his house. The newly created guest house was named Timeo, after Tauromenion, the son of the founder of the Greek city in 358 BC (it’s how Taormina got its name).

After Goethe many writers kept visiting Grand Hotel Timeo, such as Oscar Wilde, Tennessee Williams and Truman Capote. It is also a favourite hotel of famous people like Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, Valentino, Madonna and Elton John.

So, if you want to feel like a star during your stay, then Grand Hotel Timeo is the best choice.

Hotel Metropole Taormina

Hotel Metropole Taormina is a beautiful 5 star hotel on the more affordable side.

Hotel Metropole is inside a 13th century house.

If you stay there, you can enjoy amazing views of Mt. Etna and Giardini Naxos, especially from its infinity pool!

The hotel is located right on Corso Umberto, main street of Taormina and the heart of the town.

It’s also one of the cheapest 5 star hotels in Taormina.

Atlantis Bay – VRetreats

Atlantis Bay is a great choice if you want to have a private access to the beach, but still be relatively close to the Taormina’s centre.

It will take you about a 30 min walk to Taormina town centre or 12 min by car. The hotel is located on a cliff in Baia delle Sirene Bay. You can walk for 14 minutes to reach Isola Bella island.

Suites at Atlantis Bay are really special. Most have large terraces with amazing sea views and all have separate living rooms/bedrooms with beautiful marble bathrooms. These are perfect for families as the living room can easily fit 2 single beds.

Mazzarò Sea Palace – The Leading Hotels of the World

Mazzaro Sea Palace is another luxury 5 star hotel in Taormina with a private beach area.

You can walk for 12 min to get to Isola Bella, the most beautiful beach in Taormina. To reach Taormina centre, you can take a cable car or drive for approximately 30 minutes.

Villa Sant’ Andrea is another 5 star Belmond Hotel in Taormina.

While Grand Hotel Timeo is in the historic town centre just opposite the Greek Theatre, Villa Sant’ Andrea is in the Bay of Mazzaro with access to the private beach. It is also only a 6 minutes’ walk from Isola Bella.

It was built in the 20th century by another noble Englishman, so you can expect the luxury touch of British countryside in the Mediterranean.
