Mount Etna is Europe’s most active volcano and 2nd in the world. It is also the highest volcano in Europe. Which is why Etna is one of the most popular attractions in Sicily, but it may not be the best choice for everyone. In this blog post I will do my best to answer your question is Mount Etna worth visiting, based on my experience there.

We will discuss pros & cons for visiting Mt. Etna, its cultural and natural significance alongside some general tips on how to visit Mount Etna if you decide to do it based on what you’d read here.

Why You Should Visit Mount Etna

Before we go into pros & cons for visiting Mount Etna, let’s discuss why Etna is so popular and important and why you should consider visiting.

Historical & Cultural Significance

Mount Etna is more than just a volcano to Sicilians – it’s a huge part of culture here!

In Catania locals still take care of the Elephant Fountain (U Liotru), made from black lava stone. People used to believe the elephant protected the city from eruptions and some even thought it had magical powers that could predict eruptions.

Moreover, Etna also appears in the Greek myths (Sicily was an Ancient Greek colony). The Greeks believed Hephaestus and the Cyclops had their workshop inside it. Another myth was that the monster Typhon was trapped underneath, making the Earth tremble when he turned.

Geological Uniqueness

Mount Etna is one of the most complex and active volcanoes in Europe – it’s been erupting for around 2.6 million years.

Etna covers about 1,600 sq km (617 sq mi), has a base circumference of 150 km (93 mi) and stands roughly 3,300 metres (10k ft) tall. What makes it especially interesting is its structure. It has multiple craters at the top, lots of smaller cones along its sides and overlapping eruptive centres that have formed over hundreds of thousands of years.

Etna actually started as an underwater volcano, later becoming a shield volcano and eventually developed into the stratovolcano we see today. Its shape and activity have constantly changed, making it one of the most studied volcanic systems in the world.

UNESCO World Heritage Status

On 21 June 2013 the World Heritage Committee added the natural site of Mount Etna to the UNESCO List of the World’s Natural Heritage.

Mount Etna is renowned for its exceptional level of volcanic activity, and the documentation of its activity over at least 2,700 years. Its notoriety, scientific importance and cultural and educational value are of global significance, which is why it was added to the list.

Pros for Visiting Mount Etna

Let’s start with the positive ones and see what are the pros for visiting Etna.

Unique Experience

If you decide to hike Mount Etna, and especially its summit which is at 2950 metres (9678 ft) above the sea level, you will be left with a unique experience.

It’s not like you can always hike Europe’s highest and most active volcano!

Scenic Views

During your hike, you will enjoy all these scenic views of Mount Etna and the surrounding area. Your eyes will stretch as far as the Ionian Sea.

The views are really amazing, especially at the summit craters.

Adventure & Adrenaline

Hiking one of the most active volcanoes in the world will for sure fill you with adrenaline.

During our summit hike Etna was spitting ring smoke, which is usually a first sign it may erupt (which happened 7 days later lol). Witnessing this was both exciting and terrifying because you truly get to realise how active Etna is!

If you love adventure travel, you will not be disappointed with Etna.

Extraterrestrial Vibe

Being at Etna will give you vibes of another planet. The volcanic rock is quite unique, but it can also be very sharp.

Which is why it’s important to wear relevant hiking shoes (we had to rent ours because we came in sneakers – dummies!).

At other times, it’s like sand, so definitely feel it with your hand.

Cons for Visiting Mount Etna

Now, let’s discuss the cons for visiting Mount Etna based on my experience there.

Physical Demand

If you decide to visit Mount Etna, and especially go all the way to its summit like us, be aware that the hike is moderate-difficult.

If you’re in a good physical condition, it won’t be too demanding, but it also won’t be the easiest hike ever.

In our group we had different age ranges, from kids about 5+ years old to people in their 60s. So, it’s doable if you’re used to physical activity. It is not recommended for very small children and pregnant women.

Weather Conditions

You may have noticed in my photos that sometimes I wore a jacket and sometimes I was in a t-shirt. That’s because the temperatures vary about 20 degrees celsius (68 F difference) from the ground to the summit.

I was there in mid-August and I still had to pack in layers for the summit. With that being said, if you’re thinking of hiking to the summit or visiting Etna in the winter months, be aware that due to the weather conditions your tour may be cancelled or you may not be allowed to enter the park independently either.

Also, if Etna erupts or they think it might, they can still cancel the tour and not allow anyone to enter Etna independently. Of course if the tour is cancelled, you will get your money back. So it is never fully guaranteed you will visit Etna.

Cost

Visiting Mount Etna is surely not the cheapest activity in Sicily.

Etna tours are among the most expensive ones on the island, especially if you’re doing the summit tour. Even the cable car ticket is not cheap.

If you’re a budget traveller or you travel with your kids, then bear in mind that this won’t be a budget-friendly excursion.

Safety Concerns

Repeating once more – Etna is the most active volcano in Europe and second most active in the world!

There’s always a slight possibility of chance that Etna may erupt, so it is never truly safe to hike it. It is your personal responsibility and liability when you decide to hike and visit Etna, especially its summit. 

However, generally Etna is considered to be a safe volcano because every movement or tremor is recorded, studied and communicated in real time.

Is Etna Worth Visiting for Different Types of Travellers

Let’s see how accessible Etna is for different types of travellers.

Solo Travellers

If you’re a solo traveller, then the best is to book a guided tour (btw, anyone who wants to go to the summit, must do it with a volcanological guide!).

In our group we had solo travellers.

Family Travellers

If you have smaller kids, you can visit lower craters of Etna by yourself. They’re reachable by the cable car, so you can freely and safely explore the area around the cable car station. There’s even a buffet there.

Hiking to the summit of Etna is not allowed for very little kids because they should be 6+ years old for that activity.

In our group we had kids about 5+ years I’d say and they handled the hike pretty well. If your kids are used to these types of activities and they’re of an appropriate age, then definitely go to the summit with them.

Otherwise, the lower craters will be just as fine, or you can do this alternative summit tour suitable for little kids.

Senior Travellers

If you’re fit and used to physical activities, then you can definitely hike to the summit of Etna. In our group we had senior travellers who managed the hike easily.

If hiking all the way to the summit is not possible for you, then you can visit the lower craters which are reachable by the cable car and just as nice, or you can do this alternative summit tour.

How to Get to Mt. Etna

I recommend renting a car because Sicilian roads are in general very good and it’s the easiest way to get to Etna.

If you’re not into renting a car and road trip, then you can book some of the tours from Catania or Taormina to Etna. It is not that easy to get to Etna with the public transport, so I would avoid it.

When to Visit Mount Etna

Generally speaking you can visit Etna all year round if the conditions allow. If you’re visiting during the winter months, you may need to have specialist equipment like ice axes, crampons, etc.

The best time to visit Etna is from April to September, although if you don’t want to experience very cold temperatures, then the best time to visit is in the summer months. 

Best Tours for Visiting Etna

My advice is to book a guided tour and explore Etna that way. You can do it independently only at the lower craters. Plus, the guides are really knowledgeable and share many fun facts about Etna. They also take care of your safety at the volcano.

Is Mount Etna worth Visiting

As a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a symbol of Sicily, Mount Etna is one of the most iconic landmarks in Sicily. Even if hiking to the summit isn’t for you, there are plenty of other ways to experience the volcano, whether by cable car, guided tour, or simply exploring its lower slopes.

If you do choose to hike the summit, it’s a truly unforgettable experience. You’ll be accompanied by a licensed alpine guide, learn fascinating facts about Etna’s geology and history and enjoy the thrill of standing on one of the most active volcanoes in the world.

While visiting Mount Etna comes with its challenges and costs, it is one of the best experiences you can have in Sicily. So, yes, Mount Etna is very much worth visiting!
