18 Best Proposal Destinations Around the World

If you’re looking for ideas where to ask the big question, look no further! In this blog post I am sharing my 18 best proposal destinations around the world.

The destinations on this list are all romantic locations, but they differ depending on what type of traveller you and your partner are. Which is why you will find suggestions from the most popular cities here to the most beautiful islands. Additionally, the proposal destinations range from arctic to tropical ones.

Under each location I will offer some romantic ideas and best hotels to stay to help you plan out your marriage proposal.

Paris

There’s no other way to start this list of best proposal destinations than with the City of Love.

Paris is the ultimate romantic destination in the world and there’s no better place to drop the big question than here, if you ask me.

One of the best things to do is to go on a 4-Course Dinner Cruise on the Seine River with a Live Music Tour. You will be served 4 courses and half a bottle of wine or champagne per person. This river Seine cruise will cover the main highlights of Paris. Plus, the whole experience is brought to the next level with live piano and violin music. It can’t get more romantic than this.

Another great proposal location is of course on the top of the Eiffel Tower, or in front of it just when it lights up in the evening.

Positano

Positano on the Amalfi Coast is as romantic as it gets. It’s definitely one of the most beautiful and romantic destinations in Italy for proposals.

The buildings in Positano are painted in Mediterranean colours – blues, whites, yellows, and terracotta that give the place a timeless charm. It feels like you’re stepping into a scene from an old movie.

The views in Positano are gorgeous, especially at sunset, which is making it the perfect spot for a cozy evening on your hotel balcony or at one of the amazing restaurants nearby.

La Sponda is a go-to restaurant for proposals, with its incredible views, Michelin-star food and romantic atmosphere, but you need to reserve your table in advance.

Additionally, if you want to make your proposal even more special, I recommend taking a private sunset cruise.

NYC

New York City is not only the best city in the world, it’s also one of the best cities in the world for proposal.

With so many (romantic) movies and tv-series filmed there, it is easy to understand why a lot of people decide to ask will you marry me right there.

One of the most romantic destinations for proposal is inevitably Central Park, and the best way to do it is to take a Private Central Park Horse Carriage Ride.

Another great location is one of the skydecks with great city views. My favourite is SUMMIT One Vanderbilt, but Top of the Rock is another great choice too.

Lake Como

Lake Como is my favourite location in Italy and definitely the most romantic one.

The beautiful turquoise lake, colourful houses and Alps in the background make Lake Como not only a proposal destination, but also the wedding destination.

A lot of people choose Villa del Balbianello for their wedding, but it is also a nice place to propose.

But an even better location is on a private boat tour. It can’t get more romantic than that.

Kauiai

Everyone in their life dreams of visiting Hawaii at least once.

Kauai is the most rugged and lush of the Hawaiian Islands, which is what’s making it an epic destination for a proposal. 

If you want to propose while you two are having a bucket list adventure, there’s plenty of options to add to your Kauai itinerary.

For example, consider booking a doors-off helicopter ride over the Napali Coast, a 17 km (11 mi) stretch of coastline with 1200 m (4000 feet) tall jagged mountains, lush valleys and stunning beaches. You just might want to hold off on giving her the ring until after your helicopter has landed, though as it gets pretty windy up there! 

Alternatively, if you’re an outdoorsy couple, consider hiking along the 22 mile Kalalau Trail to Kalalau Beach, a remote beach that’s surrounded by impossibly rugged cliffs. This trail, usually hiked over the course of a few days, is a bucket-list trail for many hikers and a popular proposal spot.

For a more relaxed option, there are plenty of beautiful beaches on the island. Tunnels Beach on the north side is one of them, with turquoise waters, white sand and mountains in the background.

For something a bit more under-the-radar, consider heading to Salt Pond Beach Park, a quiet beach that’s frequented by locals, sea turtles, and monk seals. Plus, with its location on the western side of the island, it offers one of the best sunsets in Kauai.

Taormina

Another beautiful location in Italy, Taormina is definitely such a romantic proposal destination.

With the mix of villas, ancient sites and turquoise Ionian Sea, there’s plenty of great things to do in Taormina.

Personally, the most romantic and best location for a proposal is one of the hotels overlooking the sea and Mount Etna in background.

Another proposal idea is to go on a Romantic Dinner from Taormina with Vintage Car Tour. You will get picked up in a vintage 1961 Fiat 1100 and have dinner in a 19th century castle. The dinner menu includes starters, 2-course main menu and a dessert with drinks.

Maldives

Even though most people choose Maldives as their honeymoon destination, it is also a great spot for proposal.

With 1192 islands, including private and local islands, 26 atolls, the Maldives offers so many options to choose from for the perfect romantic atmosphere! 

The Maldives are especially known for their resorts with overwater villas that offer privacy and exclusivity, giving couples the peaceful environment to know each other.

Whether you’re dining by the beach or setting up a romantic picnic on the sand with beautiful lights, or watching the sun dip below the horizon from a glass-bottom deck, the Maldives provides countless unforgettable backdrops for proposing to your soulmate.

If you’re adventurous enough, you can go for an underwater proposal while scuba diving or snorkelling amidst colourful coral reefs.

Traditionally, you can set up a romantic sunset cruise on a Maldivian Dhoni boat, with a sunset and golden skies. You’ll find numerous choices and package options at your resort with flower arrangements, candlelight dinners, and a personal photographer to capture those moments.

Dubrovnik

Croatia is such a beautiful Mediterranean country that has gained on popularity since Game of Thrones was filmed there.

While there are many beautiful towns and islands alongside the Adriatic Coast, the best place to propose is undoubtedly Dubrovnik.

Dubrovnik has among the best preserved medieval city walls in the world, which makes it such a unique destination to visit.

Personally, the best place to propose in Dubrovnik is on Mount Srd, a popular viewpoint with beautiful views of Dubrovnik, Lokrum Island and the sea.

There’s also a great restaurant there called Panorama restaurant, so you can book a table for sunset with the view and drop the big question then.

Venice

Venice is surely one of the best proposal destinations in Europe.

Winding canals with historic landmarks dotting the sides, cafes with laid-back vibes, world-renowned restaurants for an intimate dinner, Venetian palaces with charming architecture and quaint churches full of hidden art – that’s what Venice is all about. 

One of the best ways to propose is during a private gondola ride.

However, if you prefer something a bit more quiet, there are plenty of stunning rooftop terraces that offer equally breathtaking views, but in a more intimate setting.

Krabi

I fell in love with Krabi instantly. It’s such a beautiful, romantic destination perfect for honeymoons and of course, proposals.

If you dream of a paradise, with white sandy beaches and turquoise sea, but affordable, Krabi is the best place to go.

My favourite couples activity, also great for proposing, is to book a private luxury long-tail boat tour to nearby islands.

Additionally, you can stay on Railay Beach and arrange with your hotel a romantic sunset dinner at the beach where you can then ask the big question.

Kyoto

With Japan being one of those countries we all want to visit at some point in our lives, it is almost obvious that Kyoto is one of the best places to visit in Japan and one of the best proposal destinations in the world.

Kyoto is one of the most romantic places you can choose for a proposal as you will get to experience the traditional Japanese culture at its finest, eat some of the best food in the world and you will also be able to admire a combination of centuries-old architecture with lush natural spaces.

One of the most romantic things to do where you can propose is to take a Kyoto Arashiyama Rickshaw Tour with Bamboo Forest.

The city is full of iconic places to choose a spot to drop the big question, whether you go for a secluded spot under the red torii gates in Fushimi Inari Shrine or by the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove or at one of the most romantic restaurants in the city such as The Sodoh Higashiyama Kyoto.

London

London is one of the most iconic cities in the world.

With so many great and diverse things to do, it can be hard to decide how and where to propose, but I am sure you can easily find something for you and your partner.

One of the best ways to propose is to go on a River Thames Dinner Cruise where you will enjoy a 4-course dinner, live performance and illuminated London at night.

Or you can propose on one of the skydecks with beautiful city views. My favourite is Horizon22.

Additionally, you can stay in a hotel with views of London’s most iconic landmarks and propose in an intimate setting.

Lastly, you can go on a special dinner because London has many great restaurants. My recommendation is Hakkasan Mayfair, a Michelin Star restaurant.

Iceland

Vestrahorn in Iceland is the perfect place for a proposal. The most romantic way to propose is at sunrise when the sun rising is in a beautiful contrast to the black sand dunes.

Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon is another great place. If you’re visiting in winter, it will be frozen, but still very beautiful, especially as seals love to chill on the ice. In summer, you can take a boat ride through the glaciers.

A short walk from the lagoon, you’ll find Diamond Beach. Even on a cloudy day, it’s easy to see why it’s so special. The glacier ice is scattered across the black sand beach and reminds of big diamonds, therefore the name. Just bear in mind that to experience the diamond ice, you need to visit in winter. It’s truly one of the most beautiful places in Iceland to propose.

And for Game of Thrones fans, Kirkjufell on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula is a must-see. It’s also one of the most beautiful places in Iceland and a great spot for a proposal.

But personally, the best way to propose is in a remote location under the Aurora Borealis sky.

Agra

While not everyone would think of India as a proposal destination, let me explain why it is.

Firstly, if you are a couple that love chaotic, colourful and unique places on Earth, then India kicks all the boxes.

But even more, it is a home of one of the Seven New World Wonders – Taj Mahal.

And honestly, it is to this day one of the most beautiful buildings I have ever seen. But it is even more romantic because it was literally built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal.

Therefore, the Taj Mahal is a landmark of love, so proposing in front of it is one of the most romantic things to do.

Koh Samui

Koh Samui is one of Thailand’s most beautiful and romantic islands, which is making it a top spot for a proposal. With its white-sand beaches, turquoise sea and lush hills, Koh Samui has a perfect mix of nature, peace and luxury.

But what makes Koh Samui stand out as a proposal destination is its variety of intimate spots perfect for dropping the big question.

For the classic beach vibe, I recommend Choeng Mon and Lipa Noi beaches as both offer quiet, secluded stretches for a perfect sunset proposal.

If you’re after something even more intimate, check out boutique resorts that offer private villas in the hills.

You can also propose during a romantic dinner at The Jungle Club or Dining on the Rocks. Both restaurants offer delicious food with incredible cliffside views, making it an ideal setting for a surprise proposal.

Sahara Desert

The Sahara Desert in Morocco will always be in my top 3 experiences around the world.

Which is why I believe it is one of the most beautiful and unique places for a proposal because there’s nothing more romantic than laying on the sand dunes while watching the sky full of stars.

You can also do it during sunrise or sunset, which is why I recommend spending at least one night in a Sahara desert camp.

Bora Bora

And last but by no means least on this list of best proposal destinations is Bora Bora.

There are few destinations in the world that are more synonymous with romantic getaways than the exotic Bora Bora.

Located in the Pacific Ocean and surrounded by a coral reef, Bora Bora is famous around the world for the luxurious overwater bungalows. With the stunning turquoise water as a backdrop, there is no better place in the world to propose. 

There are many activities that you can book that would be perfect for a proposal.

From a romantic private sunset boat ride to a private beach coupled with a beach side barbecue to scuba diving with manta rays, no matter what your loved one is into, Bora Bora is great to plan the perfect proposal.
