About La Sagrada Família
Basilica de La Sagrada Familia is the largest unfinished Catholic church in the world, but the current plan is to finally complete it in 2026 (don’t hold me onto my word though because they keep pushing back the date constantly!).
It was designed by the Catalan genius, Antoni Gaudi, who started it in 1883.
His architecture style was inspired by nature which you will notice in every building he designed. They all have vivid natural colours, shapes and designs.
Beside nature, Gaudi was also inspired by religion, and as a Roman Catholic, many buildings are decorated with biblical images.
In 2005 La Sagrada Familia was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Site and in 2010 Pope Benedict XVI consecrated the church and proclaimed it a minor basilica.

How to Buy Tickets for La Sagrada Familia
Firstly, let me answer this question for you – yes, you absolutely have to go inside La Sagrada Familia!
While the exterior of La Sagrada Familia is really impressive, the interior is even more so. Okay, now that we settled that, here’s how to buy the tickets for visiting Sagrada Familia.
Even though you can buy online tickets on the official website, my recommendation is to buy them on GetYourGuide because they offer free cancellations, even up to 4 hours before your time slot. That way if something unexpected happens, or you have a change of plans, you can still get your money back.
There are a few entry tickets to choose from: entry to the basilica with audio guide, entry to the basilica and the Nativity Facade Tower with audio guide, and entry to the basilica and the Passion Facade Tower with audio guide.
And yes, I highly recommend buying your tickets in advance because you’ll get a time slot and you can only enter during that time frame. If you’re queuing for the tickets, especially in the high season, you may not be able to enter if everything gets sold out.

Best Guided Tours for La Sagrada Familia
While you can do a self-guided tour, if you want to learn more about Sagrada Familia and explore it with a local guide, there are also some really great guided tours you can book.
Here are the best guided tours for La Sagrada Familia:
This is the best and highest rated guided tour which includes the visit to the interior of La Sagrada Familia.
This is the best and highest rated guided tour which includes the visit to the interior of La Sagrada Familia and optional access to one of the towers.
This is an interesting tour because you get to visit the interior of Sagrada Familia (no access to the towers) and then you can choose some of the extras, one of them being a rooftop drink at Terrace of Sercotel Rosellón, which is the best rooftop bar with the Sagrada Familia views.
This is the best tour if you’d love to combine your visit to Sagrada Familia (no access to the towers) and nearby Park Güell.
It’s very difficult to find a tour that covers the best Gaudi attractions in a single day, but this one does.

Best Time to Visit La Sagrada Familia
When to visit La Sagrada Familia can significantly alter your experience within the site.
If we are speaking about the time of the day, in the early morning you can expect fewer crowds and softer light for photos when the eastern stained-glass windows cast cooler blue and green hues. In the late afternoon sunlight streaming through stained glass creates magical colours inside when the western windows fill the space with warm orange and red tones.
In terms of the best season, for the moderate crowds and weather, the best is to visit in spring time (April – June) or in autumn (September – October).
The busiest period with the most crowds is the summer time, so if you’re visiting Barcelona then, like I did, then it’s absolutely important to book your tickets weeks in advance, to not miss out on checking one of the best Gaudi sites in Barcelona!
Winter has the lowest tourist traffic and is therefore ideal for a peaceful visit.
Lastly, if you can, avoid weekends, Spanish holidays, and mid-summer days for a less hectic experience.

Essential Tips for Visiting La Sagrada Familia
Here are some of the essential tips for visiting La Sagrada Familia.
Use the Correct Entrance
If you’re visiting individually, then head to the Nativity Facade on c/ de la Marina to the right (to the left is for groups). This entrance is open on all days of the week from 9 AM to 6 PM.
Advanced bookings will help you enter without waiting in the queue. Without pre-booked tickets, you may have to wait up to 45 minutes to enter the attraction.
Dress Code
Don’t forget to dress modestly if you plan on visiting La Sagrada Familia. It’s important to cover your arms and legs, especially if you’re in tops and shorts.
I recommend wearing a maxi dress.

Respect Your Time Slot
Tickets to La Sagrada Familia are timed, so it’s best to arrive 10-15 minutes early, especially in the summer time because if late, your entry is likely to be denied!
Also, if you purchased the access to one of the towers, make sure you climb it as soon as you enter the church because it’ll be timed too. If you miss your slot, you won’t be able to go to the top despite the ticket you’ve got. Once you’re done with the tower, then you can explore the church at your own pace and spend as much time as you need.
Bring Your Earphones
Each ticket comes with an audio guide, but you’ll need to download an app, so it’s important to have your earphones with you because they don’t come with the ticket!
P. S. There were some people listening to the audio with no earphones on, so I don’t even need to tell how disrespectful this is to everyone and the sacred building itself!

✅ Want the best photo spot? Head over to the little park at Plaça de Gaudí—that’s where you’ll get the perfect shot with La Sagrada Familia in the background.
Must-See Highlights Inside La Sagrada Familia
Here are some of the must-see highlights to see during your visit to La Sagrada Familia.
Nativity Facade
This one is hard to miss because it’s right at the entrance and in the middle of the basilica.
The Nativity Facade showcases sculptural details and depicts Jesus Christ’s birth. It really exemplifies Antoni Gaudi’s unique architectural style, with an emphasis on storytelling and creativity.

Passion Facade
The Passion Facade represents the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Christ and is often considered the most iconic facade of the Basilica, though I personally liked the Nativity Facade more.

The Towers
You can go up to the Nativity and Passion Towers, but you can only choose one during your visit. The Nativity Tower has amazing views of Barcelona City and the surrounding mountains, while the Passion Tower offers beautiful views of the Mediterranean Sea.
It’s really up to your personal preference which one you’d choose.

Inside Nave
Nave inside La Sagrada Familia is so impressive and when you are there, you’d realise why I was saying you have to check the interior of the church!

Illuminated Christ on Cross
Illuminated Christ on Cross is at the centre of the inside nave. The depiction of Jesus Christ on Cross here is very different than in other more traditional churches!

Stained Glass Windows
The use of lights and colours of the stained glass windows is to set the mood of Sagrada Familia. This was Gaudi’s intention to make the basilica so close to looking and feeling like paradise.
And I can confirm first-hand that the stained glass windows and play with light really add up to your visiting experience!

Sagrada Familia Crypt
In the Sagrada Familia Crypt you will find the resting place of Antoni Gaudi.
Best Hotels to Stay near Sagrada Familia
If you’d love to stay near La Sagrada Familia, here are the best hotels to consider.
This is the best hotel near Sagrada Familia, and mainly because their rooftop bar is the best one with the Sagrada Familia views.
P. S. You can visit the rooftop bar even if you’re not staying there, but a reservation is required! Guests can enjoy the bar whenever they like.
It also has a nice rooftop bar with the views of La Sagrada Familia and a great outdoor pool. It’s only 400 m (1300 ft) from the basilica.
This is a great choice if you’d love to have the whole apartment to yourself and a balcony with La Sagrada Familia views.

Is it Worth Visiting La Sagrada Familia
I’ve heard many times from other people how there’s no point to go inside La Sagrada Familia because of the ongoing construction and relatively higher prices. I know of a lot of people who only check the exterior and think it’s enough.
And yes, while the exterior is extremely beautiful and will leave you speechless, the real magic happens inside the church. Maybe 10 years ago going inside the basilica didn’t make much sense, but today there’s even a mass service in the church and it’s very much a completed work.
And it is absolutely breathtaking! As someone who’s been to hundreds of churches before and after visiting La Sagrada Familia, I can easily say that there’s no other church quite like it. The play with natural lights, stained windows and the whole ambience is amazing. Wherever you look up, you’re in awe.
So, yes, Sagrada Familia is very much worth visiting and should not be missed during your trip to Barcelona!
